Özet
Old age involves biological, cognitive, and psychosocial changes that significantly impact mental health. Neurodevelopmental trajectories and age-related neurodegeneration increase the prevalence of dementia, depression, anxiety, and delirium in older adults. Cortical thinning, neurotransmitter loss, isolation, and ageism increase psychological vulnerability. Globally, around 15% of individuals over 60 experience at least one mental disorder, and dementia cases have exceeded 55 million. However, atypical symptom presentations often delay diagnosis and hinder treatment access. Interventions should integrate age-appropriate pharmacological and psychotherapeutic strategies, supported by psychosocial services and interdisciplinary care. Environmental improvements and anti-stigma efforts are also crucial. This chapter adopts a holistic view to better understand late-life mental disorders and inform clinical and policy-level approaches.
