Özet

Aim: Private investments in the healthcare sector are increasingly gaining prominence. The responsibility of utilizing scarce resources in the most efficient way, and thus the success or failure of businesses, primarily falls on management. In this study, we aimed to examine the awareness of healthcare professionals working as managers in private hospitals in Istanbul about the concepts of disease burden and health profile, and the impact of these data on investment decisions/planning. Method: In our research, the survey method conducted either face-to-face or online was chosen. The population of the study consists of the managers of 165 private hospitals in Istanbul. According to the Ministry of Health data, the population of the study is 1,155 people, and the sample size was calculated as 116 people with a 95% confidence interval. The data were evaluated using statistical methods appropriate for the type of data. Results: In our study, data from 122 individuals were evaluated after excluding non-respondents, those who did not answer, and those who left the survey incomplete, out of a total of 210 health managers reached. All senior managers reported that they had heard of the concept of disease burden, with 67% of them stating that their knowledge was limited. However, it was found that these same participants had much less knowledge about the health profile of the region where their hospital is located (45%). Moreover, these participants attached great importance to health profile studies aimed at the hospital's target audience (80%). Conclusion: Our study concluded that the concepts of disease burden and health profile are not fully adopted as concrete parameters influencing investment decisions by the ultimate decision-makers. We believe that a significant factor in this is the fact that a large proportion of senior managers are not involved in the initial stages of the investment decision process and the traditional capital structure of healthcare institutions.
